Ethical SEO - What is it?
Ethical SEO is also known as White Hat SEO. Using ethical techniques, good website structure and decent Meta data are examples of 'On Page' white hat techniques.
Press releases, blog articles and good quality news or product articles are examples of some of the 'Off Page SEO' that we consider White Hat SEO(or Ethical SEO)
Search engine optimisation has its darker side. This is known as 'Black Hat' SEO.
Black Hat SEO basically tries to trick google using various unethical methods. These may include:
- Keyword stuffing - Repeating keywords over and over in a way that does not make sense to humans, often hiding the keywords (see 'Hidden text' below)
- Cloaking redirects - Setting up other websites or domains and getting them ranked in Google, only to cloak the domain and point it to your target site.
- Hidden Text - Hiding text - for example setting the font colour to the same as the background colour. This used to be done to hide keywords that had been stuffed into the page.
- Blog comment SPAM and other SPAM - Leaving comments on blogs is a legitimate thing to do and is fine. But some Black Hat SEO's use automated scripts to post comments to blogs thousands at a time in order to gain backlinks.
