Consumers are paying too much for homephone line rental

September 30th, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Release WS

= For Immediate Release =

• Millions of consumers are paying more than they need to for phone lines that they rarely use
• Comparing line deals and switching providers will almost always save long term BT customers money

The costs are about to rise for people who are on BT and TalkTalk, who both plan to raise their charges starting from October this year, meaning another rise of bills from what are two of the most expensive line rental providers in the country – and some of the biggest. For customers on these networks, it will be the second rise this year for the monthly costs.

The best way to avoid facing these charges is to look at comparing landline deals online and finding a new supplier – there are far more out there than just the big names, and you can often find the best deals by shopping around and looking at smaller providers who may be able to offer you a more a niche package that better suits your own situation.
You can save money on your landline connection in a variety of ways. Firstly, always make sure you are paying for your landline via direct debit as other forms of payment will normally net some sort of monthly charge. Secondly, signing up for paper-less billing can also net you a small monthly saving as companies love to show how much they care about the evironment.

You can also start using your mobile more if you’re on a contract – most people avoid mobiles as they can be expensive, but if you’re on a contract there’s likely minutes left over every month that you could use instead of a landline. You should also be careful of when you use your phone – if you’ve got a contract that gives you free off peak calls never assume that off peak will start at 6pm – it could start as late as 9!

Comparing and switching is still the best way to save money on your phone line though, especially if you’ve never strayed from the bigger companies in the past.

Apple TV “Inherits Problems of Predecessor”

September 27th, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Release WS

• Screen Digest suggest that Apply TV wont revolutionise television
• Believes this generation is not the time for Apple to conquer the television market

27 September, 2010

It’s only just been made available on the UK market, but media consultancy Screen Digest already believe that the new Apple TV box, which has recently been re-launched with a new slimmer design and an emphasis on enhanced streaming ability, isn’t going to be enough to win other the crowds and start a revolution in digital television similar to the phone revolution started by the entry of the Apple iPhone to the market.

The box is available for £99 and can stream content from across the net, including premium TV shows available through iTunes, YouTube content and Netflix movies. The idea behind is to bring broadband TV into a new era by coupling it with an intelligent interface and removing the need for a computer. However, many of the features of the box will already be familiar to anyone who owns another content on demand setup such as a Virgin HD box, or even a console with streaming features like the Xbox 360.

Analysts Dan Cryan and Tania Loeffler suggested that the product wasn’t really what most consumers were looking for, stating that:

“The cardinal rule being that internet-connectivity and streaming video services is still viewed by consumers as an additional feature of set top devices, rather than a reason to spend money on a specific piece of hardware.”
The analysts when on to suggest that the Apple TV entry was still an expensive option, despite its reduced price, and that it lacked any real differences when compared to other set top boxes that could also pause, rewind and stream content on demand, such as a Sky plus box.

Apple TV could eventually be refined enough to become a truly exciting product, but it’s probably not likely to happen in this latest update.

The Royal Tour That is Powered by Chip Fat Diesel

September 7th, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in General News

Today sees the start of a grand tour of the UK. This grand tour though is not taken from an 18th Century novel or diary of that time, but instead is a real live modern grand tour instigated by Prince Charles. The main thrust of his journey around the UK is to promote the START initiative.

The means of transport for this road show will be the Royal Train and in keeping with the thrust of the initiative the train will be powered by vegetable oil based diesel. The world market in biodiesel is increasing year on year and the Brazilian producers have recently auctioned over 23million litres in the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) biodiesel auction, held in August this year. The ANP said that, in total around 430,000 tonnes of biodiesel had been sold by August 31st, 2010 in the first part of an auction that will be completed this week. This first lot was specifically reserved those producers in the Combustivel Social Program, this means that they would have had to buy their oil seeds from small family farms only.

The presence of the Prince on this promotional tour has already sparked controversy with regard to the cost of running the train. Many have remarked that the journey in itself is not green and therefore detracts from the initiative itself.

We contacted the owner of United Vans of Bristol for a comment on this initiative and the use of biodiesel. He commented “It is great when an initiative like this comes to the public’s attention, quite often it seems that we need someone like Prince Charles to attract enough publicity to make the initiative work. The whole biodiesel situation is not one that I would like to comment on. Suffice it to say that it has its proponents as well as its opponents.”

The Prince’s journey is expected to last for 5 days and will cost the taxpayer around £80,000. Whether you support this initiative or not it seems that it will create much furore over the next 5 days.

About United Vans of Bristol:

Bristol’s United Vans is a licensed vehicle dismantlers and recycling yard. Whenever you feel the need to declare ‘sell my van‘ they should be your first port of call for fair advice on the value of your van. Many satisfied clients have approached them to find the Vauxhall Brava value and how much their old transit t350 is worth. They have a reputation for recycling a high percentage of the materials recovered from their dismantling facility.

Teenagers spending more time on the phone

September 1st, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases

• Large families could see big rise in bills if they don’t look into different providers
• Teenagers phone usage still high despite the internet and use of Facebook

1st September, 2010

It’s an old cliché that teenagers spend all the time on the phone, and these days Facebook has taken over from the telephone as a way for many of them to keep in touch – which is great news as it means less money to spend on phone bills. However, anyone who says the invention of the internet has stopped teenagers chatting on the phone regularly at all hours has obviously never lived with a teenager.

In fact, a recent press release from the post office has suggested that there are some big time phone hours logged by teenagers across the UK, so parents should be thinking about their bills. Calling a home phone during the evening isn’t a big deal, but many teenagers call their friends directly from a home phone TO a mobile, which might save them money on their bills, but will see yours sky rocket. With a large household teenagers chatting to friends on mobiles can cost as much as £40 a month according to recent studies.

The best way to keep these costs down is to search out a provider that’s specially geared to this kind of phone use.

Choosing a provider other than BT is often a good way to save money as they are one of the most expensive landline phone rental companies around, but it can also save you more because other companies may offer special deals for mobile calls or allow you to set up many different ‘friend’ numbers which will give you a substantial discount.

This way you can save money on your monthly bills without having to put up with teenage angst because you’ve had to remove phone privileges!
