Intense competition in mobile broadband coverage and technologies

Once again 3 Mobile and O2 Mobile have set themselves up as fierce competitors. Within days of the 3 Mobile announcement that they were cutting in half the price of their new MiFi portable wireless devices, O2 hoped to counter this competitive sales argument by cutting the price of their basic USB connection dongle. For those unaware, MiFi allows for up to five Wi-Fi users to tap into the common portable wireless broadcast system. This of course stretches the capability of a simple 3G connection to a point where mobile broadband offers almost all of the features of Home Wireless broadband with additional desirability of complete mobility.

Home broadband still offers a distinct competitive advantage over mobile in that the average speeds available are considerably higher and amount of downloads are virtually unlimited. The very nature of mobile broadband as part of wireless data streaming requires damping to be placed on peak hour usage. Considering that all of the United Kingdom’s leading broadband providers go to great lengths to publish their mobile broadband coverage maps, it becomes a bitter amusement that the same companies are quietly beginning to limit download speeds within those coverage areas.

In fairness, the reason for this was brought about by massive simultaneous data streaming of videos such as football matches in areas where everyone is eager to watch. This competitiveness has even found its way into such profit mainstays as pay as you go mobile broadband, as half price dongle offers start to include these non contract programs as well.
