Sky Plus Could could one day become a thing of the past: 70,000 homes signed up to Sky 3D

February 9th, 2011 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases
  • Sky 3D is fast growing popular amongst Sky customers and digital TV fans
  • Over half of 3D TVs sold in the UK end up on Sky’s 3D package

The subscription figures for Sky’s 3D services might seem pretty small compared to the amount of people who subscribe to a pay monthly digital TV service, but for a brand new technology that’s only really starting to take off the in the UK, it’s a pretty impressive figure. The figure is especially impressive considering the relatively low amount of 3D televisions sold in the UK right now and the fact that Sky only offer a single 3D channel mostly dedicated to 3D movies. Sky intends to expand their 3D coverage over time, but right now only Hollywood blockbusters tend to get the 3D treatment anyway.

The Sky channel’s popularity is likely to only continue, especially as its one of the only ways to watch 3D television in Europe right now. It still remains to be seen whether 3D is the future of Digital TVor just a passing fad that will be reserved only for films, but for now it seems like Sky have positioned themselves right at the forefront of this new technology.

Channel Director of Sky 3D, John Cassy said:

“Around half of all 3D TVs sold so far in the UK are connected to Sky 3D, with thousands more joining every week. The hugely positive response from customers, all of whom are tuning into Sky 3D on a weekly basis, gives us great confidence for the future.  Since the launch on the 1st October we have had a number of world firsts – with the world TV premieres of Avatar, Alice in Wonderland and the Toy Story trilogy.”

Sky intends to move 3D away from just films and use the technology to enhance high budget nature documentaries and sports events. The latter might be enough to draw even more Sky Plus box subscribers over to the 3D service.

TV packages are fast becoming all in one budget entertainment plans

March 6th, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases

Last year British households averaged 3 hours and 45 minutes each of television viewing time per day. Before you jump in thinking that might be a colossal waste of time consider that the education aspects of TV as made available from hundred plus channel cable TV providers such as Virgin Media eat up a good bit of that average. Plus consider that another large percentage of our viewing time is spent watching movies so as to save the costs of going out. TV packages from providers such as SKY TV make it pound foolish to run out to the cinema every weekend. Yes we are all watching more television but we now live in the information age. Our lives are affected instantly by events around the world, events we are made aware of through TV. And should we be remiss in our viewing, Digital TV recorders and on demand TV have us seated in front of the telly during convenient hours. On demand TV coupled with the use of recorders is another factor increasing our viewing time.
Alright we admit that it is not all educational programming. The most watched UK show for all of 2009 was the Britain’s Got Talent Finale with Susan Boyle. That was entertaining stuff and we are watching more TV simply because TV has gotten better. There are more channels and more choices. Digital TV programmes accommodate everyone’s personal taste. Whether you are after FA premier matches or a look at Simon Cowell’s scowl there is something good on every night.

BT vision from BT TV offers a unique alternative

September 21st, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases

As hard as it may be to believe, not everyone adores television. For some it is a mere convenience or diversion and plays a simple and small role as part of their communications network. Indeed many people prefer to interact more directly with the world by means of their computer and broadband. For those people for whom 500 channels of digital TV and music are unneeded, BT TV offers a superb alternative. That choice, which coincidentally was announced at digitalchoices.co.uk, is BT vision.

BT Vision is the television arm of BT broadband. In fact subscribers to BT broadband receive the BT vision based package which includes Freeview at zero cost. As BT vision is aimed at selective digital TV viewers, specialized programming is all offered on a pay per play basis. To compare BT vision and other popular digital television alternatives such as those offered by Tiscali and Virgin TV, one should visit the Digital Choices site.

Aside from news and announcements pertaining to digital TV, Digital Choices also provides, at no charge to the public, unbiased reviews and comparisons of prices and service for the varied telecommunications products now most in demand throughout the United Kingdom. Digital TV now reaches 90% of British Homes

September 1st, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases

Almost 23,000,000 households in the United Kingdom are now equipped with a DTV receiver. This figure being in sharp contrast to just 10 years before, when more than half of UK viewers received their television by means of analog signal.

Obviously the ongoing and almost complete changeover from analog to Digital TV has played a major role in this development. However, the greater cause is probably due to simple advances in electronics overall. Development of low cost high resolution wide screen televisions with built in digital tuning is one of the largest factors in digital TV growth. Most of the UK has abandoned the use of Freeview set top boxes in favor of hundred channel cable TV.

Suppliers such as Virgin TV rush to meet the growing demand with massive operations in place for the installation of fiber optic cable throughout the United Kingdom. Noted consumer protection resource Digital Choices points out that the inclusion of digital programming recorders as incentives for cable TV sign up has even further heightened demand. In contrast to the use of digital TV recorders many programming networks such as ITV now offer total on demand programming. It would seem that digital TV continues to make customized viewing the entertainment norm.

BT TV and a program for people who don’t watch much television

August 21st, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases

For whatever reason there are some people who simply don’t watch a great deal of television. For these people BT TV offers a very unique service which we will refer to as pay as you go TV.

To qualify for BT Television you must contract for Broadband through BT. Your television service is based on Freeview with an additional rate of four pounds per month added to a very low broadband base package. Still, why pay for more than you need? With BT Vision you purchase specialty programs such as movies and sports events at a reasonable per viewing price. The interesting thing about this program is that you are actually not buying cable TV as a separate entity.

You’re purchasing your cable TV as an addendum to your broadband. What this says is that how you bundle your telecommunications packages can vastly affect the price you pay. To further understand package savings on Digital TV go to digitalchoices.co.uk. At the digital choices website you will find all manner of news and information relative to prices and service for digital TV.

You’ll also find a simple to use digital TV price comparison tool. Into this tool you enter your post code and select whether you are interested in straight TV packages or bundling of TV and broadband. BT Vision is certainly not a package for everyone and those who watch the prerequisite 8 hours of television daily are far more likely to opt for plans from Tiscali or Virgin. But for those whose lives are lived primarily without the assistance of a television or computer screen, BT Vision may be a perfect alternative

Bundling telecommunications with Virgin TV

August 11th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases

In order to receive a great deal for digital TV from Virgin Media you must combine that purchase with either home phone service or broadband connection, or as Virgin Media would no doubt prefer a package of all three. While many people have chosen to rely on mobile phone service entirely for their phone usage, far more people still prefer the consistency and reliability of home phone service.

As to broadband, one would think that a consumer looking for 50 plus premium television channels is also a regular Internet surfer. So when we consider the restriction placed by Virgin Media so as to qualify for their television service, it is likely not much of a restriction at all. That said we can consider various cable TV packages as offered by Virgin TV. Virgin TV offers three channel package options.

These are presented as one might buy a T shirt in medium, large, and extra large. The base price for a television package including the basic phone line is 11 pounds per month. Prices travel upward to 86 pounds per month for what is referred to as the Virgin Media VIP package.

As with Digital TV from other providers such as the BT Vision package, value largely depends upon your planned usage. However, if you have a household populated with all different age groups a Virgin TV extra large package is likely to be your immediate choice. For assistance in evaluating digital TV both with and without broadband please visit digitalchoices.co.uk.

Digital TV has entered a new era of choices

July 11th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases

For those who don’t appreciate the value of intense competition, consider this. Thirty years ago TV in the UK was a government regulated medium with just a few channels and all of that sent by terrestrial airwaves. Programming was limited to that which could be accommodated by small budgets. Today British television quality is the standard for the world. We have hundreds of channels filled with exciting programmes from every country in the commonwealth and every corner of the world. All of these give the viewer a multitude of televised entertainment choices. With all of this fine programming to choose from including live sports, movies from America, and original UK shows, it only makes sense that we have choices in the area of how much TV we want to buy. Yes there is still free television and with a set top box, Digital TV in the form of Freeview is plenty of entertainment for some. But many people prefer a hundred channels to choose from and for that privilege they are willing to pay. This of course raises the questions, how much to pay, and to whom? We no longer pay a few quid a month for simple cable TV. Now we can very well pay a 100 pounds per month for 52″ wide screen home theatre. All of this is well and fine so long as we make sure we get exactly what we want for a completely fair price.

So not only do we choose from almost infinite programming, we also choose the company that sends it to us. To facilitate this choice we turn to digitalchoices.co.uk. Digital Choices offers a free onsite television cost comparison tool. All one need do is enter their postcode into a search box and click to receive an instant display of all the best deals from Virgin TV, BT TV, Tiscali and others. And all of the comparisons are location specific to your home.

DIGITALCHOICES.CO.UK ASKS ARE YOU READY FOR KICK OFF THIS SUMMER? – Digital TV

June 18th, 2009 by writer | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases

As the weather heats up so too does the summer schedule for sports fanatics – World Cup qualifiers, Lions Tour, Ashes Test Matches… the list is almost endless when it comes to the must see events of the summer sport season.

The choice of channels and providers can be daunting, not to mention the potential cost of catching every sports event on TV but, with the help of this guide, and by following our 5 top tips, it’s clear that there is something for level of sports fan and every size of budget.

Michael Phillips of comparison service DigitalChoices.co.uk says:

1. Something for nothing
“If you really don’t want to spend anything on your sports viewing then Freeview/Freesat is the only way to go. You can still tune in to Wimbledon, F1 and the FA Cup and Freesat customers with the right set top box can also enjoy high definition (HD). It’s simple to set up and it’s free – and it really doesn’t get cheaper than that.”

2. The minimum spend
“If you are an existing BT broadband customer or if you live in a Freeview area and you want a sample of live sports coverage for a minimum outlay then opting for BT Vision with free Setanta Sports 1* or Setanta Freeview is a sensible choice. Setanta Sports offers live Barclays Premiership games; 2010 away World Cup qualifiers; and some serious live golf coverage with the PGA.”

3. Middle of the road
“For the sports fan that wants something more but who doesn’t wants to spend over £40 per month for their sporting fix, then subscribing to Sky Sports through Virgin Media is a good solution. Sky Sports covers over 60% of live Premier League matches as well as The Ashes, the US Open golf and the Lions Tour.”

4. In at the deep end
“Virgin Media’s TV Size: XL with Sky Sports Collection and free Setanta Sports offers unbeatable value, ensuring you never miss a live sporting event on TV. This package will give you every live Barclays Premiership game and all the rugby, cricket, tennis and golf you could wish for. From motor sports fans to pugilists, everything is covered.”

5. High Definition spectaculars
“The latest must-have for sport on TV is High Definition (HD), providing a truly immersive, visually stunning experience. Sky’s Sky+ HD service brings all the content of Setanta and Sky Sports to your arm chair but in HD format.”

Michael continues:
“Consumers may be tightening their belts this year but that is no reason to miss out on the sporting fun this summer. The range of choice for the stay at home sports fan can be daunting at first glance but by asking yourself a few simple questions and using a reputable comparison service like DigitalChoices.co.uk you can quickly find something to match your sporting interests and budget.”

Top tips for choosing the right TV sports package:

1. Check the TV schedule – with sporting events now spread across various channels it’s worth doing some homework as to which sports, events and specific fixtures are featured on which channels before you sign up. Do your research and don’t assume that any one channel will have all that you need.

2. Check contract length – some channels and providers to sign up to a full 12 month contract for their sports channels. For example, Sky whilst customers have to commit to 12 months for the basic TV service they can then switch in and out of specific channel packs from month to month.

3. Consider bundling up – if you are thinking about signing up to a TV package from Virgin Media or Sky then you should consider taking your broadband and home phone services from them as well. Both providers offer significant discounts for customers bundling these three services together.

4. Don’t be afraid to haggle – if you already subscribe to a sports TV package and are reviewing your options, give your provider the opportunity to try and keep you as a customer. Special offers and competitive rates are usually only for new customers but existing customers can call up and ask for the same benefits – it’s possible your provider will bend on the issue in a bid to keep you from switching.

5. Compare your current package against our best buys below:

Excellent values in digital TV compared for you

June 13th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases

I am slow to admit it but I am well old enough to remember the days before cable TV existed. It seems as if I can still hear my father exclaiming, “Who on Earth would ever pay to watch television?” This statement becomes all the more ridiculous in the face of 1000 channels available through the cable in the form of digital TV.

A sidebar to this is that I still cannot imagine the demand that exists for satellite radio and hear myself exclaim, “Who on Earth would ever pay to hear radio?” Still, I understand why we all love digital TV and are willing to pay for so much entertainment. But before anyone signs up with a TV provider, they should examine all of the great deals that are currently available for TV, broadband and even home phone service combined.

To do this, waste not a minute looking at brochures or advertisements. Scoot right over to Digitalchoices.co.uk. Digital Choices is the latest offering from the consumer choices group and as with all of the CC network websites they are devoted to showing UK residents how to save great deals of money on services sold everywhere in Britain. They even provide the low down on BT TV, and pther top providers.

On the Digital Choices site you can learn all about the ongoing national changeover of Freeview to the digital format or study pricing plans from all of the UK’s leading cable TV providers. Whether you choose to pay for TV or prefer to watch what is provided for free, the choice is yours at Digital Choices.
