Search Engine Optimisation – What’s the Point?

November 27th, 2008 by admin | No Comments | Filed in General News

Even if you have a really good website that sells products or services that people actually want to buy, if nobody can find your site, how will you make money?

Let’s look at some facts:

In a poll in 2002 by iprospect.com, it was found that around 85% of internet users asked didn’t look past the first 2 pages of results when searching for anything online.

Imagine that? Basically, if you are not on the first 2 pages of the search results for the terms your customers are typing, you may be losing 85% of the potential trade.

And, it seems, people only get more and more impatient as the internet grows. If the same study was to be repeated in 2008, it may well be found that a higher percentage don’t look past the first 2 pages.

Search Engine Optimisation, when performed correctly, should put your website in front of people that are actually LOOKING for your products/services.

Does SEO Have To Be Expensive?

It depends what you consider expensive! – Many companies are happy to pay thousands for a full or partial page advert in a popular magazine, even though they frequently get very little return on their investment.

Even if your advert is in a relevant industry magazine, what are the chances that a reader whom actually wants to buy your products or services will see your advert at the right time?
Compare that with having your websites appear in Google when someone is actually searching for your product or service, and you can hopefully start to see the value of a good Search Engine Optimisation campaign.

Back to the magazine analogy, would you pay a cheap graphic designer to make the advert that represents your company, or a respected and skilled one that knows their trade?
The same goes for online marketers! – The expertise and experience of a professional online marketer does cost money.

You also need to be sure you go with an SEO company that does not try, in any way, to trick the Google algorythm. A good SEO company will strive to improve your site and its visibilty in an ethical manner, and thus increase its success, and would never try to manipulate the results – as this could lead to a penality being issued by Google.
