The Society of London Theatre have announced 2008 as a record breaking year. It is said that well over thirteen million people visited London theatre shows, and spent over £480 million, which is a one percent increase on the previous years figures.

The president of SLOT, Nica Burns, seems to attribute this level of sucess to the wide range of shows avaiolable, from Mamma Mia to the Jersey Boys, not to mention the appearance of stars such as David Tennant

“You’ve just got to look at what’s on across the West End to see why it’s a really strong.”

SLOT failed to mention the visitor and revenue details of specific shows, and both the society and London theatre houses in general are said to be ill inclined to sharing the ins and outs of their financial matters, whereas in the US, the associated finances and ticket sale figures are made public on a weekly bases.

Not all of the UK theatre companies are so cagy about their revenue details, for example, Cameron Macintosh recently announced that revenue the advanced sales of tickets for the show Oliver breat all the previous shows.
