Van Breakers Yards Help Environment by Recycling Scrap Vehicles.

June 14th, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases

The world of recycling and our ongoing efforts to help the planet recover from the past decades of over use of resources is often concentrated on what waste we produce from the household environment. However, the legislation surrounding the control of end of life vehicles has produced very positive results. We can now consider our local van scrap yard and van breakers to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. The separation of the different materials in the vehicle recycling environment has been the key to the ongoing success.

The local van scrap yard is a business that, like any business, has to make money to survive. When we take our old vehicles to them and receive a small amount of cash for them it can often seem like the amount is almost too small to be bothered with. But when you consider the amazing variety of materials that they must have the facilities to dispose of, you can see that the amount you receive is fair allowing for legislation and profit margins.

The list of materials is quite comprehensive.

Obviously there is Metal, the average car is 76%, by weight and most of this is sheet steel. There are other metals such as aluminium and magnesium and in total about 98% of the metals in a vehicle are recycled.

Plastics are a big part of vehicles and the content of plastics has risen by 25% in the last 20 years. The lightweight nature of this material and its ease of moulding make it an inevitable part of today’s vehicle manufacture. As we all know from our domestic recycling, this material is hard to dispose of and recycle. The wide range of polymer types in the average vehicle means that recycling is difficult and more often than not this gets ground and sent to landfill.

Fluids that help in the operation of the vehicle are a major concern for the environmentalist. The recovery of these fluids is a vitally important part of vehicle dismantling as the inappropriate disposal of oils is a major concern with regard to the environment.

Catalytic convertors are a valuable and as yet under used recoverable product from vehicle dismantling. The unit contains steel and precious metals such as Platinum, rhodium and palladium. The use of platinum and rhodium in Western Europe is almost exclusively centred around the production of catalytic convertors – over 65% of platinum and 90% of rhodium – this makes the business of recovery and disposal a viable and ever growing business.

Batteries are a resource that has been recycled for many decades and as such the average vehicle dismantling yard is well versed in the collection and recovery of this valuable resource. Although it is estimated that 90% are currently recovered and recycled there are still the missing 10% that are thought to still be in the vehicle when it is crushed. Legislation is expected to reduce this occurrence to nearer zero.

There are of course many other materials that need to be dealt with by a vehicle dismantler, but these are the most obvious and constitute the largest portion of any dismantled vehicle.

The van scrap yard has much to contend with legislation being one major factor in everyday business. The best of them also want to go beyond the legislation and do the best that they can do for the planet and the environment. it is no wonder that they are places of mixed feelings for some people, just remember that some of them are run by the good guys.

Mercedes Vans Are The Most Viable Van For Vehicle Dismantlers Says United Vans Of Bristol

BRISTOL November 2009

It comes as no surprise in these days of tighter budgets that people are reducing the amount they spend on everything from business expenses to household budgets. Now you may expect that more people would be opting for second-hand spares to repair and maintain their vehicles. Sadly due to the ever increasing complexity of most vans this is not particularly a DIY situation. With most repairs and part replacements needing the services of a mechanic the cost savings made by buying second-hand parts are not always enough to encourage the use of second-hand parts.

This has an effect on the van manufacturers that vehicle dismantlers are prepared to break for parts and then store for future sale. The exception to this, at United Vans, is Mercedes Vans. These van spares are of immediate use in the van parts resale market. The fact that Mercedes parts are generally built to last and the longevity of the vans themselves keeps them on the road for longer than most makes, it seems that more individuals and companies are prepared to maintain them using second-hand parts. This in turn makes it viable for the firms that run vehicle dismantling businesses to pay for the disassembly and storage of these parts.

At United vans they actively seek out the old and new models of Mercedes Benz vans and will collect them from customers after their useful life has passed. As a licensed End-Of-Life vehicle dismantling firm they are ideally placed to do this and if they can recycle the parts then we all benefit from less landfill and useless scrap. Mostly all parts of a vehicle can be recycled but it is the prohibitive cost that means that for a lot of vehicle scrap there is no choice but to crush it and dispose by other means. When a second-hand part is genuinely re-used it is kept out of the system for another lease of life. This is real world ecological recycling; re-using something is always preferable to spending time, money and energy reforming it to a new shape or raw material. Where ever possible we can all take this on board, whether it be a van or a cardboard tube, re-use, re-use, re-use.

Van Recycling – Because every little bit helps!

August 25th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases

It is perhaps a sad fact that the current economic crisis has caused many of us to neglect our duties regarding recycling and other ‘green’ issues. It is hard to make sure you do everything you can to help the planet, when you are struggling to pay the bills.

One quite major way that you can help is by choosing how you dispose of your scrap vehicles. If you have an unwanted vehicle that you are looking to get rid of, then consider calling an ethical car and commercial vehicle dismantlers.

Far from the old image of a greasy slightly overweight man in overalls throwing used engine oil in a hedge, a modern, efficiently run vehicle disposal yard can strip a vehicle of all usable parts, thus lessening the waste, and then send off the rest of the metal to be melted down for reuse.

It is not just ‘scrap’ vehicles that these business can collect either, some vehicles are suitable for export via boat, and in such cases the vehicle may well go on to help people in other, less affluent countries.

If you are interested in learning more about scrap can collection or van removal, then contact http://www.unitedvans.com today.

United Vans are also a great place to call if you are in need of Van Spares or Van Parts.

Scrap Car Collection and Van Salvage is a powerful and underappreciated form of recycling

Bristol, Somerset, UK. July 2nd 2009 – When people talk about recycling, the idea tends to conjure up images of heading down to the local bottle bank, or handing in old newspapers or aluminium cans. However, while these are valid forms of recycling in their own right, there is one very powerful way that you can help the environment especially from a business perspective: Scrap car collection / van removal.

The obvious recycling benefits include the salvage of working parts from a vehicle, but sensible and effective car and van salvage goes beyond that. About 65% of a junk car is comprised of steel. Across the country, millions of tons of steel gets scrapped every year. However, the most important part is just how much energy this can save. According to a report from the Environmental Protection Agency, recycling the steel from salvaged cars requires 74% less energy than making it new.

New laws for ELV (End of Life Vehicles commonly referred to as ‘scrap’ or ‘junk’ vehicles) passed in the EU means that the days for cars sitting around in grimy junkyards rusting into oblivion is well and truly over.
Modern junkyards and vehicle disposal companies like Bristol’s United Vans are now incredibly environmentally efficient places, taking not only the parts and metal of a car but also removing and safely disposing of items like tires and batteries.

Improved business practices and intelligent regulations on recycling mean that getting rid of that old car could actually provide more recycled materials than an entire years worth of trips to the bottle bank.
