United Vans Of Bristol Comment On Illegal Scrap Yards

February 7th, 2010 by admin | No Comments | Filed in General News

The news yesterday that Sheffield Council is to prosecute Susanne Briggs and Lee Mayfield for not seeking planning permission for their illegal scrap yard has caused the spectre of dodgy scrap yards to rear its ugly head. The pair that lives in Shiregreen, Sheffield, have turned their neighbourhood into a nightmare for local residents. The street that they live on is both residential and narrow and yet at times it is reported that there have been up to 15 vehicles at once parked along its suburban verges waiting to unload scrap metal, wood and tyres at the address.

This situation has been going on for two years according to some local residents and has meant that the street has been reduced to the status of a lorry strewn scrap yard. Sheffield Council have attended the site to gain photographic evidence to support the legal action that they are currently undertaking. This consists of prosecution by the city’s magistrate’s court for ignoring a notice to seek planning permission for their unauthorised operation and a separate notice to cease their activities issued by the council. Failure to comply with these requirements could see the pair served with an injunction and in the worst case scenario further prosecution and a fine.

The vehicle dismantling industry has taken a lot of action over the last 10 years to clean up its image and to conform to new laws regarding waste disposal and vehicle dismantling codes of conduct. The perception two decades ago of the scrap yard as a place best left to big men with oily clothes and Alsatian dogs has by and large disappeared to be replaced more and more by the new breed of efficient vehicle dismantlers that make their profit by correctly disposing of vehicle waste through dismantling for car and van spares and selling separated metals and plastics to recycling facilities that buy quality raw material for their processes. This story does nothing to help the progress of most of the industries ‘good guys’.

The owner of United vans commented “This story has nothing good in it as regards our industry’s reputation. These people have made a quick buck at the expense of their environment and neighbours peace and quiet. The fact that it has taken two years for this to come to legal proceedings is the most shocking part of it. We, as an industry, have enough pressure on us to clean up our act, without this sort of negative publicity. Long gone are the days of the fly-by-night scrap man and quite rightly so, from many different perspectives, not least the environmental impact, this sort of operation has to be stamped out and stamped out quite firmly. If you have an old vehicle for disposal just look out for the ‘vans wanted‘ signs around your local town or city and take it there, check that they have the relevant licences to do what they do and allow your old vehicle to meet its final resting place knowing that perhaps some of it will end up as car or van parts for someone else’s vehicle – lengthening the life of their vehicle by the demise of yours.”

The current attitude towards responsible living with regard to our environment is an ever growing attitude for many today. The responsibility for disposing of our waste rests with all of us. So do the right thing whenever you dispose of anything other than household rubbish. Find out where to get rid of it safely and recycle where possible. It’s up to all of us!

Mercedes Vans Are The Most Viable Van For Vehicle Dismantlers Says United Vans Of Bristol

November 29th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases

= For Immediate Release =

BRISTOL November 2009

It comes as no surprise in these days of tighter budgets that people are reducing the amount they spend on everything from business expenses to household budgets. Now you may expect that more people would be opting for second-hand spares to repair and maintain their vehicles. Sadly due to the ever increasing complexity of most vans this is not particularly a DIY situation. With most repairs and part replacements needing the services of a mechanic the cost savings made by buying second-hand parts are not always enough to encourage the use of second-hand parts.

This has an effect on the van manufacturers that vehicle dismantlers are prepared to break for parts and then store for future sale. The exception to this, at United Vans, is Mercedes Vans. These van spares are of immediate use in the van parts resale market. The fact that Mercedes parts are generally built to last and the longevity of the vans themselves keeps them on the road for longer than most makes, it seems that more individuals and companies are prepared to maintain them using second-hand parts. This in turn makes it viable for the firms that run vehicle dismantling businesses to pay for the disassembly and storage of these parts.

At United vans they actively seek out the old and new models of Mercedes Benz vans and will collect them from customers after their useful life has passed. As a licensed End-Of-Life vehicle dismantling firm they are ideally placed to do this and if they can recycle the parts then we all benefit from less landfill and useless scrap. Mostly all parts of a vehicle can be recycled but it is the prohibitive cost that means that for a lot of vehicle scrap there is no choice but to crush it and dispose by other means. When a second-hand part is genuinely re-used it is kept out of the system for another lease of life. This is real world ecological recycling; re-using something is always preferable to spending time, money and energy reforming it to a new shape or raw material. Where ever possible we can all take this on board, whether it be a van or a cardboard tube, re-use, re-use, re-use.

United Vans typifies modern car disposal: Safe, clean and efficient

October 15th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in General News

= For Immediate Release =

BRISTOL, UK. August 15 2009 – When you’re involved in an accident and you end up writing off your car, your thoughts tend to move straight on to your next vehicle. However, there’s a whole lot more that goes into the responsible and efficient dismantling of old vehicles than you might think, and it’s companies like Bristol’s United Vans that work with the insurance companies to make sure that an old vehicle makes the minimum amount of impact on the environment.

United Vans has been working in the dismantling, recycling and salvage business from its headquarters at the Quarry Garage, Bristol for over four years. The company provides a service that scraps only the most impossible to recycle parts of a vehicle. Everything else is removed to be used again (usually for Van Spares) elsewhere, not least the huge amount of steel which can be reclaimed from many vehicles that would normally take large amounts of energy to produce. In fact, recycling the steel from automobiles in this fashion nearly 75% more energy efficient than processing new steel in a factory.

Everything else from the tires to the battery is removed before the chassis finally gets crushed. These items can be hazardous to the environment so it’s incredibly important they are disposed of properly and all the relevant paperwork and laws are followed. United Vans is a clean, safe and careful operation which is a million miles away from the traditional view of a ‘junkyard’, pilled high with rotting old car shells.
United Vans works in conjunction with insurance companies across the UK, so if you have a car that’s available collection can be arrange for a very competitive rate.

The company even offers a huge amount of second hand vehicles at the kind of prices you won’t find from your average car sales lot, and advertises these vehicles to perspective buyers via their website, unitedvans.com which also has more information of the recycling process of the governmental laws in place regarding vehicle salvaging and scrapping.

About United Vans:

A vehicle salvage organisation and supplier of both high quality second hand automobile parts and second hand vehicles, United Vans is based in Quarry Garage, Bristol. Van Recycling – Because every little bit helps!

August 25th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Press Releases

It is perhaps a sad fact that the current economic crisis has caused many of us to neglect our duties regarding recycling and other ‘green’ issues. It is hard to make sure you do everything you can to help the planet, when you are struggling to pay the bills.

One quite major way that you can help is by choosing how you dispose of your scrap vehicles. If you have an unwanted vehicle that you are looking to get rid of, then consider calling an ethical car and commercial vehicle dismantlers.

Far from the old image of a greasy slightly overweight man in overalls throwing used engine oil in a hedge, a modern, efficiently run vehicle disposal yard can strip a vehicle of all usable parts, thus lessening the waste, and then send off the rest of the metal to be melted down for reuse.

It is not just ‘scrap’ vehicles that these business can collect either, some vehicles are suitable for export via boat, and in such cases the vehicle may well go on to help people in other, less affluent countries.

If you are interested in learning more about scrap can collection or van removal, then contact http://www.unitedvans.com today.

United Vans are also a great place to call if you are in need of Van Spares or Van Parts.
