Google reveals Chrome OS – Google and it’s love of Open Source Continues

Lot’s of fanfare is surrounding the recent open source announcment of yet another Google project. Google’s Chrome OS was recently exposed at Googleplex in silicone valley. It’s not ready for beta just yet, nor is it shipping on any products.

Chrome OS is designed to be a light weight, open source project aimed at the netbook and constantly connected desktop computing environments. The OS is web-based and runs entirely from within the Chrome browser. It’s a linux OS variant with a Chrome browser type UI.  Users will mainly access remote code and use cloud computing  for storage and application delivery.

The fact that Google is in opening this to the open source community says a lot about Google as a company. The chief Googler must know that by encouraging an open standards based OS akin to the Linux community, that they are only helping to foster additional growth and improved services.

Which should help sell a lot more Ad Words and Video content. Think about that for a minute. Google encourages growth by making the web more fluid and dynamic, in turn Google sells more of its core products. Brilliant!

Google announced that Chrome OS will include a unique security mechanism. After reading Google’s announcement, Google has decided to return to the basics by entirely revamping the underlying security structure of the OS. This will mark Google’s attempt to combat the ever so present viruses, malware and all too common security patches.

Google is not releasing much about marketing details as the official launch is late next year, yet they do say that Chrome OS will not run on just anything — there will be approved hardware. Chrome OS won’t work with standard hard drives, just SSDs. So no download of Chrome and GO. However I would venture to say that since this will be an open source project, more than a few hacks will surface for those wanting to try Chrome. After all, it is a Linux core.
