Google has released its annual list of the most popular search requests this year. Normally it’s not a list that’s too hard to guess if you have a vague idea of pop culture. The list was topped by Boyzone singer Stephen Gately following his death and subsequent media controversy in October. Other celebrities on the list include Jade Goody, Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga.
The list is compiled through the billions of searches conducted over the year by British users. Interestingly the list can also be sorted by area so you can find out what tops the results for each specific town – quite a useful asset, despite the fact the results are always a year behind.
Top news items included reality TV star contestant Susan Boyle from Britain’s Got Talent and swine flu.
A spokesman from Google said: “People searched about new sensations like Lady Gaga and Susan Boyle, but they also turned to the web to learn about the deaths of Stephen Gately, Jade Goody and Michael Jackson.”
Contrary to popular opinion about the amount of porn on the internet, adult searches didn’t appear anywhere on the Top 10 lists. For websites, Facebook topped the list of searches while most of the big hitters including YouTube, the BBC and eBay also appeared. Social networking site Bebo also made an appearance.
Google has also released the hottest trends of year for the past 9 years, starting with Nostradamus in 2001 and moving up through Spiderman, Prince Charles, Big Brother, James Blunt, Steve Irwin, iPhone, BBC iPlayer and Stephen Gately.
