Google’s Brand Value Increases, despite Recession

The last few years have been difficult for a large amount of companies both old and new, large and small, and many have been forced into liquidation by the poor state of the economy. SME’s may have suffered the most in the recession, but we’ve also seen some huge brand names suffer serious loses. However, Google continue to buck this trend with a huge increase in its brand value.

According to Interbrand’s annual survey of the top 100 global brands, Google had the biggest rise in its brand value by a massive 25%. Google isn’t the company at the top of the list – that honour was reserved for drinks company Coca Cola. However, Coca Cola saw only a 3% rise in brand value – quite an insignificant amount compared to the search giant.

Financial companies saw their brand value plummet across the board, while car companies also saw major losses. In fact, the 2009 survey marks the first time that the total value across all 100 brands has actually fallen by 4.6% or to put that in perspective, 1.15 trillion dollars.

The overall technology sector which includes Apple and Amazon did well for the year. Graham Hales, managing director of Interbrand UK stated that brands need to produce loyalty in order to maintain their value during the recession.

Holding a massive 90% of the UK search market Google certainly has loyalty as one of their main qualities. Unlike many other sectors that have seen a huge drop in consumer loyalty, Google has managed to maintain an overwhelming amount of trust in its ability to produce unbiased and useful search results.

We’re sure this is something that Microsoft – who have maintained their #3 position in the survey – aren’t all too happy about and are looking to change in the near future as they set their sights on the UK in their next range of international optimisations for their own search engine, Bing.

the Economic recession made a lot of jobless people in my own country. We could only hope that our economy becomes strong again :)
