Worried about shopping online? It seems that most people in the UK don’t have a problem with it at all, with new figures revealing that online retail sales have increased by a massive 22% during May, marking the strongest monthly growth in the sector since the recession began two years ago.
Marketing magazine has reported that UK digital shoppers managed to spend over four and a half billion pounds last month; the equivalent to over £70 for each person in the country. The strongest growth was seen in both the clothing and alcohol sectors, which could be due the continuing good weather being enjoyed by the country as well as the build up to the World Cup.
Electronics have also seen a 14% growth over the 2009 figures. Just how much of that figure has to do with the popularity of new Smartphones is unknown, but it may well indicate a public with more money to spend out on ‘digital’ luxuries than in the last few years.
The Interactive Media Retail Group published the latest figures on online sales. Director of Information at the MRGI, Tina Spooner, commented: “With online sales growing at their highest rate in almost two years, this is good news for the e-retail industry. The fine weather in May, together with the build-up to the World Cup, appears to have had a positive impact for e-retailers.”
Growth is expected to continue in the market as consumers go online to find better deals than they might find on the high street. Concerns of security of information have lessened somewhat in recent years, while websites have become easier to use and more efficient at finding out exactly what customers want.
This confidence isn’t shared with every country in Europe though – the figures are lower in many countries and Britain is the top online spender on the continent. Despite this, growth in the market is expected to expand by nearly 20% in Europe this year. Do you do your shopping online, or do you still prefer spending your hard on cash in real stores?
