Technology giants Sony are set to unveil a new music and video subscription service at their conference in Berlin today. It will coincide with Apple’s conference in San Francisco where they will explain the latest developments they have planned for their iTunes service
Details about Sony’s new service are vague at the moment however it has been reported “Sony would use its PlayStation games consoles as the starting point for a new service that users will be able to use across a range of other Internet-connected devices. That could include Walkman music players, Vaio computers, Bravia TVs, Blu-ray players and Sony Ericsson mobile phones.”
This will not be Sony’s first venture into the music subscription market. In 2004 they launched Sony Connect, a service which proved a huge failure and was withdrawn by the company two years later. The service was riddled with software bugs and failed to capture consumer interest due to massive popularity of the iPod brand compared to Sony’s own mp3 players.
In the past, Sony has failed to make the same impact with their internet based projects as they do with their hardware. Their social media network for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Home and Japanese YouTube rival eyeVio have both been met with only moderate interest however they are hoping this new service which can be used across multiple products will be more successful.
The service is expected to launch next year so only time will tell what Sony have planned to ensure their service becomes more a success than its predecessor.
